• 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque
• Six-speed manual transmission only for the new 1.0-liter engine
• Five-speed manual and six-speed automated manual continues with 2.0-liter four-cylinder
What Unique Features Does It Offer?
Although not a first for the compact-car segment, blind-spot warning and lane-keep-assist safety systems will be available for the first time for the 2015 Focus, and a rearview camera is standard.
There also are new enhancements for the Sync infotainment system via Ford's AppLink technology.
The big news is the availability of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine. This newest EcoBoost engine was introduced late last year in the Fiesta subcompact car and delivers as much as 37 mpg in combined driving (32 city/45 highway). Expect the new engine to improve upon the combined 33 mpg (27 city/37 highway) available from the current efficiency-optimized Focus SFE with an automatic transmission — although how much of an improvement has yet to be determined.
What Kind of Standard and Optional Safety Equipment Is Offered?
Standard safety features include antilock brakes (rear drums on S and SE; rear discs on others), stability control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a rearview camera. The Ford Sync system, which is available on all Focus models, also includes an emergency crash notification feature that automatically dials 911 when paired with a compatible cell phone. Ford's MyKey system, which can be used to set certain parameters for teen drivers, is standard on every Focus except the S sedan.
What Models Will It Compete Against?
Chevrolet Cruze: A satisfyingly well-rounded small car that has rewarding handling, a spacious interior and trunk and solid fuel economy. There's only a single four-door sedan body style, however.
Honda Civic: With several worthwhile upgrades for 2014, the Civic just keeps getting better. The Civic doesn't necessarily excel at anything, but it somehow is better than most competitors at just about everything.
Mazda 3: Totally redesigned for 2014, the slick Mazda 3 continues as the top choice for those who want the most involvement and interaction from their car. If space is one of your top priorities, the 3's backseat and trunk aren't as roomy as those of some compact cars.
Should You Wait for It?
The 2015 Ford Focus' new styling seems to make for a more premium look, and our brief initial look at the interior shows designers have backed off from the highly technical look of the current Focus dash and center stack in favor of a softer, more premium direction. So it looks as if waiting for the 2015 Focus will give you the option of buying what may become the most sophisticated-looking choice in the small-car class.
